Independent Verification

People have been indicating that I might be an alcoholic (not the case, as I rarely have more than 3 or 4 drinks per week) for some time now. But I will admit to being fairly knowledgeable about our friend ethanol (which looks a bit like a happy dog) and how it's used to make liver disease easier than ever.

And now, we have proof of my knowledge.
97%ALCOHOLIC

As an aside, as I write this, Kirsten is plugging away on her computer working on her own blog (link to come when I'm allowed to link to it), and listening to an album by The Puppini Sisters called Betcha Bottom Dollar. They do 1940s-style close-harmony music, and of course are neither Italian nore related to one another.

Right now she's listening to a cover of "I Will Survive," originally by Gloria Gaynor. The album also contains a cover of "Heart of Glass," by Blondie. And there's a snappy little cover of "Wuthering Heights" by 1980s powerhouse Kate Bush, although of course the novel of the same name (which inspired the song) is neither snappy nor little.

A study in contrasts, this is.

Blast From the (Awesome) Past

Dennis DeYoung is coming to St. Louis to do a "free" concert at RibAmerica festival on May 23rd.

I am So. Totally. There.

And, as part of my superhuman efforts to make Kirsten cool in the 1970s and 1980s sense, she has started to really fall in love with Styx as well, and she is so excited I think she threw up a little (in her mouth) when she heard the KSHE disc jockey mention that he was coming.

The bummer is that we can't see Cowboy Mouth on the 24th, because we'll be going to a wedding. But hopefully DdY will make up for it.

That's right, I gave him a nickname. What of it?

Backstreet Boys, Eat Your Hearts Out

So, recently Scott Adams (the guy who writes Dilbert, asked his fans to submit random lyrics, on the assumption that these things would combined to form a song.

This, to be honest, is a lot like my idea of how "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" was written (inane lyrics here). Of course, the Backstreet Boys had legions of adoring fans and good looks, so they probably could have put any old gobbledygook to a backbeat and scored a gold record.

Back to the subject at hand, here's the video from the Dilbert lyrics thingamabob:

The music is by a German group called Rivo Drei, who, as of yet, has no wikipedia page.

Free-form Thoughts

Today I met with a professor named Bill Buhro, who does some really neat work with Lead/Telluride semiconductors, formed from quantum threads (which are not quantum dots, of course). His research into them involves, he thinks, future applications in solar power by increasing the number of potential electron/hole pairs which can be produced by a photon striking the quantum thread. Cool.

The other day Kirsten and I bought our St. Patrick's day shirts, and I settled on one with the Green Lantern's logo. Kirsten had no idea who he was, so I had to explain him to her. I'm somewhat disheartened that this classic, if oft-overlooked, superhero isn't part of her daily thought processes, the way he is mine. Ah, well, what can you do?

I'm immensely proud of my wife, who now knows random Pink Floyd lyrics.

Last night Kirsten and I saw In Bruges, a freaky-ass movie with Colin Farrel, Ralph Feinnes, and Brendan Gleeson. It's not all that gory until the end, despite it being about a pair of hitmen. But it's pretty funny - mostly shock humor/black humor. And it's a little unsettling, I admit.

Now I should stop.

Best Cover Ever?

Some dude at some place covered a hip-hop song you'll definitely recognize. On a guitar.

Please note: he makes excellent use of recording and looping. And he definitely got some girlie action (thanks, Mick Jagger!) after this performance.
